May 31, 2006 3:02 am

Haven’t really settled back into life in Singapore as yet, despite having got off the plane 5 days ago.

Taipei was a beautiful experience: I love the Subway, I love the people, I love the dark winding alleys on our adventure trips. But beautiful things come to an end, but it is also because they end that they are beautiful.

Now, all I need is to move on, as well as a lot more discipline: Discipline to clean the room, discipline to commence my studies, discipline to enjoy my life again.

21/5  - 26/5

 Early 6am @ Changi Airport

Ric and me at Changi Airport Terminal 1, 6am in the morning.  I wonder if I’ve ever told you this, but the Airport is one of my favourite places to hangout… I can just feel love in the air from all the I’ve-missed-you-hugs and goodbyes.

 Cheap Airport Shuttle Bus Ride

Instead of paying $60 for Airport-Hotel transfers, you can pay NT$135 (S$7) for a much more comfortable ride in a large couch ("Flying Dog Co."), which may take 20mins longer but gets you to the hotel anyway.

Comfy Hotel Room

Paradise hotel: Situated at the corner of the famous Xi Men Ding, it provided a spacious and cosy residence for us to rest after every day of adventure. S$100 per room per night.

First Lunch, Minced Pork Rice

Shortly after we checked into the hotel, YingXiu our Taiwanese friend came along to pick us up, and promptly brought us to an eatery for a late lunch. This was the cheap and tasty minced meat rice.

Smelly Toufu!

Smelly Tofu! You can smell the stench from 50-100 meters away!!! Despite the offensive odour, it wasn’t really that bad, and I managed to eat 2 out of YingXiu’s box of 6.

Ric and YingXiu at the Fanciful Ice Shop

I wonder if it was the lighting, but this photograph gave Ying Xiu a very demure and elegant look. YingXiu was a friend Ric got to know at the 2002 LEP Taiwan Immersion. Back then she was at Taipei First Girls High. Now, she is an elite studying Biology in National Taiwan University, proficient in badminton, dance and gives tuition to her juniors too. Wow!

 At the Fancy Ice Shop...

Anyway, this was taken at an Ice Shavings shop (Ice Kachang) that had very sophisticated varieties of Ice, which includes ice-cream, fruits, nuts, syrups, cream and etc… this was the 3rd photo taken as YingXiu had tendencies to close her eyes during the snapshot.

Ric, YingXiu and Sotong Ball

Ric, YingXiu and "Squid" balls. There was a lot of confusion between Squids, Cuttlefish and Octopi… so we had a lot of debate and discussion but we couldn’t derive any conclusion. Only after my return to Singapore did I research and see these:

Yingxiu, YiQ, Ric @ DanShui

A portrait of us at DanShui, along the river. BaLi would be on the opposing river bank.

 Food @ Ba Li

We were expecting to find Seafood bounties at BaLi, only to be disappointed at the little variety presented to us. Nevertheless, we had a meal of Deep Fried Oysters, Fish Skin, Mussels and Stir-fried Fern (Yeah, you read that right…)

Film Shoot at Xi Men Ding

Chanced upon a film-shoot at a road junction beside Xi Men Ding. I don’t think Film-makers in Singapore ever get to block up a busy road to do a film-shoot? Unfortunately, the Artiste was an unknown entity to me.

Attacking the Bento

Waking up hungry caused ferocity, and that’s why I’m brutally attacking my bento set that I bought from 7-11. Taiwanese convenience stores are everywhere (I’ve seen 5 in a 50m radius), and the variety of food you can buy is heavenly.

Shop Name's Sai Men

SaiMen Tian Bu La… According to our guidebook this is an old but famous shop.

Tian Bu La -- similar to Yong Tau Foo

So what exactly is this Tian Bu La? Many had mistaken it for Tempura, but it actually is some sort of Yong Tau Foo in peanut sauce, and comes along with unlimited helpings of delicious white carrot soup!

Jing Hua City, aka Ball

JingHua City - an architectural magnificence, but a commercial failure in my opinion. Despite being the only 24 hour shopping mall in town, it fails to be appealing nor exciting.

May 20, 2006 10:56 pm

Hi Guys! The past week has been kinda busy, with all the appointments and the bombshell of paperwork from MOE for the Chinese Universities applications. Many days were spent into the wee hours 5am… ahh… now it’s finally time for some relaxation!

We came to the airport from Ric’s place at Pasir Ris, where I spent the night. Figured out I’ll save a lot more money this way instead of taking taxi from Bishan. My flight’s going to be at 0810 hours, via China Airlines to Taipei, and I’ll be back at 1930hours on 26 May!

I’m expecting a whole lot of fun, good food! Keep your eyes peeled on this page for photos after I return. =D =D =D

Oh dear, usage time for the internet is running out. See ya!

May 11, 2006 11:59 pm

This day marks 2 years 4 months of my Full-time National Service, as well as my being Operational Ready. This has been a great learning sojourn, and this learning will go on. Yes sir, it will go on.

(L-R) Ceyang, Eugene, LTC Tan (Commanding Officer), Jianwen, yiQ.

Through thick and thin and finally to ORD.

Auntie and I

Auntie and me. I’ve spent 2 years 4 months working alongside her, she spent the same amount of time shovelling food into my mouth.

Jessie and I

Jessie and me. Despite being relatively new (taking over Erica), she has settled herself comfortably in the unit and established herself as a vertically-challenged big sister!

Crazy Kids

(L-R) Jianwen, yiQ, Max, Jireh(Back)

The legendary and awe-inspiring Crazy Big Kids~ The insane Saturday afternoons at Sentosa, Roller-blading at Esplanades, and Adrenaline-pumping Night cycling. Name an adventure, and CBK most probably was there already.

Receiving my COS and NRIC

Receiving the Certificate of Service (COS) and Civilian Identification card (NRIC) from my staff officer CPT Brian. *Spot Jireh in the picture?*

My Beloved CBT Section

Back Row: Jireh, Huang Peng (My Understudy), yiQ, Auntie Lim

CBT Section is a wonderful family, full of fun, joy and care. I’ll be back to visit often!

Crazy celebratory dinner at Suntec Sizzlers

(L-R) Songyu, Aldric, Koonyen, yiQ

After a long day at work taking photographs, the entire cohort moves to Suntec Sizzlers for our celebratory dinner! Well… apparently we’re being caught in the act here… but I’d still insist I’m straight!

The whole cohort stoning outside Esplanade Library

Stoning outside esplanade library, enjoying the last gathering… it’s been a long way since PTE Party, LCP Party, 1-year-service Party,  CPL Party, 2-year-service Party and now ORD Party. Memories… beautiful memories…
